Juvenes Translatores
A competition to reward the best young translators in the European Union
We promote language learning and translation If Europeans are to be 'united in diversity', as the EU’s own motto puts it, we need to be able to understand languages other than our own. Our annual Juvenes Translatores translation contest, started in 2007, aims at reaching 17-year old students who have a thirst for foreign languages. In the long run, learning languages will bring us closer and help us understand each other’s cultures. And it will make it easier for students to study and work around Europe. Studies show the ever-growing need for translation and translators in Europe. It’s useful for language students to be prepared for this! Juvenes Translatores raises awareness of the importance of translation skills and the need to reassess translation — as a means of ‘mediating’ between languages — in the context of language learning. The main goal of EMT is fully in line with the EU priorities for higher education: improve the quality of translator training in order to enhance the labour market integration of young language professionals.
The EMT competence framework, drawn up by European experts, is at the core of the project. It defines the basic competences that translators need to work successfully in today's market. More and more universities, also beyond the EU, use it as a model for designing their programmes. By training highly skilled translators in close cooperation with the language industry the EMT seeks, in the long run, to enhance the status of the entire translation profession in the EU.

LIND - the abbreviation for Language Industry Expert Group - consists of language industry experts providing DG Translation of the European Commission with expertise in language industry matters in the field of translation, language data and language technologies. It is made up of influential language industry representatives and meets 3 or 4 times a year in Brussels.
Translating Europe Workshops (TEW)
smaller scale events in EU countries
Translating Europe workshops are part of the Translating Europe project, created to bring together translation stakeholders. They complement the yearly Translating Europe Forum and consist of smaller scale events, targeted at specialised audiences within national translation communities. They are organised by the Field Officers – the local representatives of Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) in the EU member states – often in cooperation with universities of the European Master's in Translation or other partners from the language industry. Topics include terminology; machine translation; new language technologies such as artificial intelligence; the benefit of translation for businesses; audio-visual translation; localisation; the future of the language industry, and the translation market. COTSOES was established:

FIT Europe is a regional branch of the International Federation of Translators.
FIT Europe's mission is to represent the interests of translators,

AudioVisual Translators Europe
Thanks to the work of specializes professional audiovisual translators, people all over Europe can enjoy films, series, documentaries, news, informational videos and social media content produced in languages other than their own. AudioVisual Translators Europe, the European federation of national organisations and associations, unites these media translators working in dubbing, subtitling, voice-over and other forms of media translation. We represent several thousand translators working for cinema, TV, streaming services and the corporate sector.
AVTE coordinates national efforts, is the key communication partner for relevant bodies on audiovisual translation issues and works both to inform legislators of the importance of good practices and to make the profession more visible on a European level.
Collective bargaining
#2023TEF panel called Fair play – Fair pay (FRI 10/11, 9:35 – 10:45) focuses on good practice in the relationship between translation agencies and independent translators. Covenants and agreements between respective associations have been concluded in different countries, regulating relations between the two stakeholder groups. The technology changes, translators stay.
Ever wondered how people used to translate without computers or the internet? How technology has tr
ansformed our working lives? How office design has evolved over the decades?
The DGT Museum of Translation, based in Luxembourg, shows how our work has changed over time, by collecting stories, photos and objects. It keeps some trace of equipment and furniture from times long gone, and helps to capture human memories — so often lost when people leave or retire.
Part of DGT Museum is brought also to this year’s Forum and you can try historical working environments on 2 computers with fully functional simulations of MS DOS and WORD5, Windows 3.1 and Wordperfect, Windows XP and TWB and others. But you can also travel even further back in time and try to dictate your translation or try to re-type the audio recording on a typewriter, using headset and a foot-operated microtape player. Or you can try the most ancient technology of them all…
